The besieged Gaza Strip

For 14 years, the Gaza Strip has been living in a state of total isolation, siege and recurrent waves of wars and attacks on population and their property, which  leaved a severe impact on the physical infrastructure, livelihoods and psychological and social well-being of the population.

The Gaza Strip is the most densely populated area in the world with 5,000 people in each square kilometer. It is an area of no more than 365 square kilometers inhabited by 2 million people, half of whom are children.

Missing basic needs

The Gaza Strip is suffering from very complex humanitarian conditions in the absence of basics with:

  • Acute water scarcity, which, if available, only 3% of it is safe for human consumption.
  • Electricity is available for a maximum of only four hours a

While the health system is on the verge of collapse, as many of its resources are severely damaged after having suffered heavy losses in recurrent wars and have often been targeted by shelling and destruction. The facts on the ground are horrible considering the following:

  • 52٪ shortage of basic medications
  • 62٪ shortage of cancer medications
  • 60% shortage of laboratory and blood banks equipment.
  • 50% shortage of medical supplies and disposables
  • There are only 1.2 beds per 1,000 patients.
  • There are only 56 ventilators.
  • There are only 40 ICU beds.

This is at a time when corona virus is spreading to add a new challenge to the many challenges facing the Gaza Strip.

Deteriorated economic conditions

The occupation is imposing a state of isolation and collective punishment on the Gaza Strip, which has a major impact on the economic situation.

  • 80% of citizens depend on aid.
  • 32% of citizens below extreme poverty line.
  • 46% is the unemployment rate among citizens.
  • The occupation closes the sea, not allowing fishermen to fish.
  • Citizens’ farms and lands are systematically destroyed.
  • Fuel is not allowed into Gaza as well as building materials and any other materials that may contribute to improving the economic and humanitarian conditions of citizens.
