The urgent relief project to support Morocco in response to the earthquake disaster

Friday evening, September 8, 2023, a devastating 7-magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale struck Morocco’s Al Haouz region, causing massive destructions and life losses, felt by several Moroccan cities such as Rabat, Casablanca, the country’s largest cities, Meknes, Fas, Marrakech, Agadir, and Taroudant. In response to this disaster, Hayat Yolu launched an urgent relief project for survivors and those affected by this earthquake, the first violent earthquake in Morocco in a century.

Current situation

People and official agencies quickly joined forces to save those trapped in the ruins and to help the injured. So far, more than 2,100 people lost their lives, and more than 2,400 injuries have been recorded, of which 1,220 are in serious condition. Many people have lost their homes and property, constituting a severe humanitarian shelter crisis.

Project Objective

Through this project for Morrocco, we aim to contribute to the relief of those affected and mitigate the violent effects of the earthquake on the families of the victims and the injured. We provide immediate food and clothing support to those affected to help them and protect their lives and dignity. In addition, the project focuses on providing health support to women and children. We also support the specialized teams’ rescue efforts to assist the injured and vulnerable.

Areas targeted in Morocco

The project aims to assist thousands of people who have lost their homes in the earthquake areas: Al Haouz, Taroudant, Chefchaouen, and Marrakech regions. The first phase of Hayat Yolu’s project will contribute to the basic foodstuffs, tents, blankets, and hygiene kits.

While Morocco is facing daunting challenges due to the powerful earthquake, Hayat Yolu hopes that this project will serve as a starting point for providing the necessary support and assistance to those affected to return to their everyday lives. We call on all to contribute and participate in this urgent relief project to help rebuild survivors’ lives and support those affected by the earthquake in Morocco.
